Troubleshoot Cascade in Excel

Use this article to fix common issues that prevent Cascade from working as expected. Most problems happen when macros are blocked or when Cascade is opened in an online version of Microsoft Office.

Note: Cascade is only available to administrators with a CliftonStrengths subscription.

Before you start

Use desktop Excel (required)

Cascade doesn’t work in Office online (for example, Excel in a web browser). To use Cascade, open the file in the desktop version of Microsoft Excel installed on your computer.

Tip: If you’re not sure which version you’re using, check whether you opened the file in a browser tab (Excel online) or in the Excel desktop app.

Complete these setup steps every time you open a Cascade file

When you first open a Cascade file, do these steps in order:

  1. Enable macros - If Excel shows a security banner at the top of the window, select Enable Content (or Enable Macros).

  2. Initialize the file - Go to the Welcome tab and select Click Here First.

  3. Refresh the Team Grid - Go to the Team Grid tab and select Refresh Page so Cascade includes all team members in the file.

After you refresh the Team Grid, you can deselect members or groups as needed. Once the Team Grid shows the correct team members, go to any other report tab to view the rest of your Cascade reports.

If reports aren’t appearing as expected

Try these quick fixes:

  • Confirm you’re using desktop Excel, not Excel online.

  • Make sure you selected Enable Content at the top of Excel.

  • Return to the Welcome tab and select Click Here First.

  • Go to the Team Grid and select Refresh Page.

Enable macros

Cascade relies on Microsoft Excel macros. If you don’t enable macros, Cascade may not load or refresh reports correctly.

Windows

Enable macros when prompted

  • If you see a yellow Security Warning banner, select Enable Content.

  • If you see a Security Notice window, select Enable Macros.

  • If you see a prompt to trust the file (often when opening from a network location), select Yes.

If Excel says it can’t run a macro
Windows may be blocking the file.

  1. Close the Cascade file.

  2. In File Explorer, right-click the Cascade file and select Properties.

  3. On the General tab, clear the Unblock checkbox.

  4. Select OK, then reopen the file and enable macros.

If you opened Cascade from an email
Save the Cascade file to your computer first, and then follow the steps above to unblock the file.

If you still can’t enable macros

  1. In Excel, select File > Options.

  2. Select Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.

  3. Select Macro Settings.

  4. Select Disable VBA macros with notification.

  5. Select OK, then reopen the Cascade file.

Mac

When you open Cascade for the first time, a macros warning may appear. Select Enable Macros.
